Chapter Eighteen

Cassidy

I lay on my bed, staring at the gray rock ceiling, thinking about the initiation. I held up my arm and ran my fingers over the space where the Demon Hunters mark had once been inked on me. Killian’s blood had bonded me to him, allowing me to feel some of his emotions. But here I lay, feeling more disconnected from him and Clan than I ever have. Killian’s words and their meaning beat into me. They didn’t choose you, you didn’t earn this…they did it out of obligation to uphold their oath…and now they are stuck with me.

No wonder he had no faith in me as a warrior.

Knock, Knock

“Cass?” Casper called from the hall.

I let out a sigh, relieved because I could tell Casper anything, and right now, I needed to vent. I threw open the door and startled at the sight of Killian, standing with one arm braced against the door frame, the other on his hip. Casper shot me an apologetic look from behind him. “That’ll be all Casper.” He said over his shoulder and waited for him to leave.

“You used Casper to get me to open the door?”

“Would you have opened the door if you knew it was me?”

I said nothing.

“Right, that’s why I used Casper. We need to talk.” He grabbed my arm and ushered me in to the room, closing the door behind him. “Sit.” He pointed to the bed.

I sat and folded my arms defensively across my chest.

“What’s going on? I got the feeling I said something wrong at the ceremony. Did I?”

Did I want to tell him and confess my insecurities with him? Would it make me seem weak? Because that would not help me fit in with the band of Hunters.

“Neither of us are leaving until you talk to me about this.” He leaned against the door, trapping us both in the room.

“Um, no. Get out of my room. I don’t want to talk to you right now.”

He didn’t move. So, I went over to him and tried to move him aside, but he stood, arms crossed, blocking the door. “Not moving.”

I let out a frustrated grunt.

“All you have to do is tell me what upset you,” he said matter-of-factly.

“Stop caging me! I’m not some demon that needs bound!” I spat.

“No, you are a stubborn woman who won’t tell me what is wrong. I got all night Cass.”

“You can’t force this out of me.”

“You’re right, but I’m a patient man who knows that if it’s this hard for you to talk about, it must be important. And I’m willing to wait.”

I remembered my training session with Jax and tried to focus on my frustration, like a woodsman focused on turning the smoldering tinder to flame. I only needed enough to distract him so I could get away. Closing my eyes, I envisioned the times Killian had taken me out of action, thinking of the pain and upset I felt…I opened my eyes and—nothing. No flame, no heat. No matter how mad I got at Killian, I did not want to hurt him.
